Lesson 1, Topic 1

Circles of trust

From an evolutionary perspective, we are neuro-hardwired to want to fit into and be part of our community. If we lost the protection of our tribe we might not survive for long. It’s a big part of why we care so much about what others think.

As a business owner with different tribes (family, sport, business, etc.), you need to adjust your circles of trust according to the people and areas of your life. You need to be very specific about who you entrust with your information and which opinions you listen to. Where do the people in your life fit into your circles of trust?

The quadrants are:

  • Personal
  • Financial
  • Spiritual
  • Professional

Rings are:

  • Centre – self
  • Intimate – partner/spouse and/or best friend
  • Familiar – close friends and family
  • Acquaintances – other friends, colleagues, employees, investors
  • Strangers – everyone else

Your intimate and maybe even familiar rings are people that love you despite your flaws. If they don’t pass that test they don’t belong there.
