Head In The Sand

"If I ignore it maybe it will go away..."

This led to the creation of First Principles Consulting Small Medium Enterprise (FPC SME) and our reason for being...

Many business owners start as technical experts in their field –  accountants, plumbers, optometrists, lawyers or carpenters to name a few.

When they buy into a business, buy a business or start their own, they are expected to become instant entrepreneurs, leaders and managers. This creates to a gap between where they are and where they want to be. As a result their business requires a high level of input relative to the output (owners are working longer and harder than they should). FPC SME helps business owners create a low input, high output business that works with or without them so they can focus on what matters most.

FPC SME was established to help other business owners to overcome that gap without the confusion, uncertainty and chaos that many endure.

Are you are experiencing some or all of the following symptoms?

If You Answer Yes To Any Of The Following:

You've Created A Job For Yourself...

Plus all the responsibility of being a business owner (e.g. taxes, payroll and keeping your sales pipeline full).

...Not A Lifestyle Business

What Are Your Options?

Option 1 - Struggle

You can choose to stay here and burn out. You know you can’t keep working like this forever. How do you get out from under the pile of work you're buried under?

Option 2 - Quit

You can choose to quit, get off your wheel and get onto somebody else's. But then what? drudging your way through a 9 - 5 that drains your energy and passion for life?

Option 3 - Sell

Can you quit (option 2) and sell your business as an asset for a profit? If you're in this position you probably can't sell because you are your business - the magic ingredient.

None of these are particularly appealing options...

The Good News!

Option 4 - A Path Forward

Step outside the hamster wheel and create a lifestyle business

This is exactly what the best businesses do and you can too!

It’s time to make a decision, you can keep on paying the price. Doing things the expensive way. Doing things the hard way with no guarantees or you can seek out those that have blazed the trail before you.

So, why not instead be guided and supported in creating an integrated, predictable and reliable system of people, process and technology to remove you as the bottle neck in your business?

“[Success] comes to the visionary companies not so much as the end goal, but as a residual result of relentlessly asking the question ‘How can we improve ourselves to do better tomorrow than we did today?’”

What is the hidden cost? How many of these apply to you?

How much time, money, blood, sweat, tears, heartache, frustration could you save if you didn’t have to reinvent the wheel?

How many opportunities are you missing? Important time with kids, family and friends? What if you start or grow your family and have to soon dramatically reduce your hours?

Do you have a life, interests or hobbies or have they all disappeared? How’s your physical and mental health trending when you find yourself working crazy hours each week just to try to keep the wheel turning?

“If your business depends on you, you don't own a business—you have a job. And it's the worst job in the world because you're working for a lunatic!”

Michael E Gerber, Emyth

What Is The Small Business Trap?

Up to this point, your business has grown and been managed organically. Everything you’ve done so far has been reactive, for example hiring more staff to help meet your increasing demand. But something has changed and that growth has slowed or stopped. You feel like you’ve hit a ceiling in your business and there still is never enough money coming in. You might even feel like your business is going backwards as you struggle to sustain this pace.

You realise that what got you to this point is actually now limiting your business and growth because despite having a team to support you, you are still working up to 80 hours per week and your to-do list is only getting longer. The irony is that your team is heavily reliant on you and you might also be heavily reliant on a few key team members as well (key person risk). Some of them are probably just as frustrated as you because they can’t take time off either.

Ultimately, you’ve found yourself on a hamster wheel of your own design trying to outgrow your problem by getting more clients so you can hire more staff but this just spins the wheel faster. The business is now running you, not the other way around and all of this is putting pressure on your relationships, family and health. You know that eventually, something will have to give.

To make it worse, there aren’t many places you can turn for support as most business groups are focused on networking – putting your best foot forward. With everyone putting up the facade that everything is fine many business owners feel like they are the only ones struggling. Enter imposter syndrome leading to loneliness, hesitation and doubt.

Key Person Risk - if you or one of your team members couldn’t work because of an emergency, what would happen to your operations and revenue?

It's not just you, this is a MAJOR problem that most small businesses don't overcome because...

Transformation Is Possible

We’ve all seen and know that it’s possible to escape from the small business trap.

From that friend of a friend that never seems to work to people like Richard Branson whose companies “run themselves” so he can focus on kitesurfing and competing in the billionaire’s space race. Business owners with an Effective Organisation:

  • Can show up and be present in their lives and the lives of their family and friends.
  • No more imposter syndrome fear, doubt or isolation.
  • Have more freedom to choose where they work from when they work and most importantly how much they work.
  • Attract and retain better clients and top talent.
  • Don’t have to parachute into the business every time something goes wrong.
  • Add value to their business asset meaning they can sell it faster and for a higher valuation.
  • Can take advantage of opportunities that come up.
  • Spend more time on the things that matter most to them.
  • Don’t try to do business by brute force
  • Have addressed the underlying operational problems (acting reactively) and have a structure in place.
  • Have better cash flow because their business is more efficient, produces less errors/re-work and a consistent pipeline of new clients.

Rather than buying another expensive course promising the world, why not invest in an integrated experience of ongoing support, community and education, at a price you can afford?

Get everything out of your head, organised and prioritised...

So that you can see exactly what needs to be done, when and by whom, without the fear of something falling through the cracks.

Stop doing the energy sucking tasks...

So that you can re-ignite your passion for your business and get back the space, time and clarity you deserve in your life.

Integrate sustainable systems and structure...

So that you don't have to keep repeating yourself, micromanaging or fixing the same problems over and over again.

Increase your leverage with a low input, high output approach...

So that you can do more of what you love and less of what you don't.

Become part of a like-minded community that want to see you succeed...

So that you can develop mastery, overcome imposter syndrome and not feel like you're the only one on this (sometimes) lonely journey.
